FREDA BLACK TO ANNOUNCE CAMPAIGN FOR DURHAM D.A. ON FEB 1

DURHAM-Former Durham Assistant District Attorney Freda Black will hold a news conference on Friday, February 1st at 2 p.m. at the Durham County Courthouse to launch her second campaign for the Democratic nomination for District Attorney.

“Community, fairness, and integrity are the values we need in our District Attorney’s office. They will be the tenets of my tenure when I am nominated and elected to office,” said Attorney Black. “I am running because I care about this office and this county and believe we need to restore the public’s confidence and trust in our District Attorney’s office.”

Black recognizes her loss to Mike Nifong in the May 2006 primary elections as a learning experience. Having spent more than 14 years as an Assistant District Attorney, Black’s experience has allowed her to value the importance of openness and honesty in her field of work.
As the mother of two young girls, Black empathizes with the concern for keeping Durham a safe place for children to grow. She is prepared to unite the community by working with neighborhood leaders, elected officials, and law enforcement agencies to create strategies to curb gang violence, illegal drugs, and violent crime.

Black represents toughness in the courtroom and is passionate about being fair. “I pledge to be an even-handed prosecutor who makes decisions based on the merits of a case and the evidence in a case – not on politics,” said Black.

With more than 22 years of courtroom experience, Black is ready to restore the public’s confidence of the judicial system in Durham County. Emphasizing transparency, openness, and integrity, Black places the citizens of Durham County as a top priority.

Experience shows that Attorney Freda Black encompasses the leadership needed to restore the reputation of the Durham County judicial system. “As District Attorney I will work with the community. I will emphasize fairness, and I will work to make integrity a cornerstone of public service – restoring the people’s faith and confidence in the Durham County District Attorney’s office.”

Freda black is a native of Alamance County. Her father, James Fred Bowman, served Alamance, Rockingham and Caswell counties for 10 years in the North Carolina Legislature.
